
Racing Formats
The Penobscot Race event will take place on August 17, 2024.
This event offers the most diverse variety of races the Maine Whitewater Champions has to offer.

Registration opens 9:00 AM, located at McKay station parking lot.

Safety meeting at 10:30 AM, located at McKay station parking lot

Downriver Short Boat (limit 9'6) Time Trial begins at 11:00 AM, followed by Long Boat (limit 12'6) and Duo Time Trial.

Whitewater Slalom begins at 1:00 PM.

Awards Ceremony beings at 5:00 PM, NOCO lunch site. Live Music to follow at The Pit.
Downriver Time Trial
Time Trials will begin above McKay station, through The Gorge and ends below The Cribworks when your boat hits the flat rock in the river right eddy. Flows during the Time Trails will be between 2,400 and 3,400 CFS.
Slalom
Slalom will begin at the bridge above The Cribworks. The paddlers must enter and exist 5 eddies on their way through The Crib; Pelican, Pillow, Roll Dam, Guardian and Room of Doom. The clock stops when your boat hits the flat rock in the river right eddy below The Crib. Flows during the slalom will be between 2,400 and 3,400 CFS.
Athlete Eligibility
The Gorge Crib is a highlight for adventure seekers, showcasing the raw, untamed nature of Maine's wilderness. It is imperative you are mentally and physically ready to participate in these races prior to registering.


Experience
Participants must have run this stretch of river prior to participating in the racing events.

Gear
All participants MUST have and are required to wear a helmet and PFD.

Safety Equipment
Throw bag required. Kayak float bags strongly recommended.

The Penobscot River Races take place between McKay Station Dam and Chewonki's Big Eddy Campround located along the West Branch of the Penobscot River in Millinocket, Maine
